6th Degree Black Belt - Goju-ryu karate
Brown Belt Brazilian Jiu-jitsu
BJJ Lineage:
I started with Royce Gracie and Royce Gracie promoted me to blue belt. Royce’s older
brother Relson Gracie promoted me to Purple Belt. I have been training with Prof.
Stephen Maxwell for 12 years (who started with Helio Gracie, graduated the instructor
program under Helio and Rorion Gracie, and was the 1st American promoted to Black
belt by Relson Gracie) and Prof. Stephen Maxwell promoted me to Brown Belt.
James Terry started his martial arts career at the age of 12 in Goju-ryu karate.
My first instructor was Shihan Gary Lanfrank of the House of Karate (which is still
active to this day). Our training was conducted in an old garage that Shihan had
that we all fixed up to make our dojo. The dojo had no air conditioning or heat,
in the summer time we roasted and in the winter we froze. Our training focused on
traditional karate. We practiced indoors and outdoors practicing basic moves in
all types of settings, uneven land, kicking and punching up hills and down hills,
training in the rain, in the snow, in the cold, in the mud.
Over time we began to include other forms of martial arts. Boxing, kicks from Tae
Kwon Do, Muay Thai, aikido, in the efforts to become well rounded fighters. We even
sparred with zeal (often times without gloves and only with a mouth piece) we were
trained as full contact karate fighters. Heavy emphasis was placed on understanding
tactics, strategy, learning how to angle our attacks and defenses, proper footwork
(kicking and punching) and how to avoid a confrontation.
After watching Royce Gracie win the Ultimate Fighting Championship we realized we
needed to learn ground grappling. We found Mr. Stephen Maxwell of Maxercise/Sports
Fitness and we were off. Our close personal relationship endures to this day with
Prof. Maxwell and Team Maxercise/Maxercise Sport Fitness, Philadelphia, PA. Our
current instructor is Prof. Regis Lebre and Prof. Stephen Maxwell. Prof. Regis Lebre
is the student and training partner of Prof. Saulo Riberio (6 times World BJJ Champion).

Regis
Lebre, originally from Fortaleza, moved to Rio de Janeiro as a
purple belt. In Rio he completed his journey to black belt under
two of BJJ's greatest modern innovators, the legendary Royler
Gracie and six times World Champion, Saulo Ribeiro. For four
years Regis studied with Royler and Grandmaster Helio Gracie. He
then left to help Saulo Ribeiro, himself a black belt under
Helio Gracie, establish his own academy. Eventually, Regis
earned his black belt from Saulo and Royler. His years spent as
one of Saulo's main training partners, with and without the gi,
have well prepared him to stand out as one of America's top
instructors. |

Steve Maxwell |

Stephen
Maxwell has been a lifelong student and teacher of fitness,
training and athletics.
As a student from West Chester State Teachers College he
wrestled his way to the finals of the Middle Atlantic Conference
Championships. After earning his Masters degree in Exercise
Science at West Chester State College, he taught and coached
wrestling at the junior high and high school levels.
Stephen continued his wrestling career in the Army, winning the
United States Armed Services Championships in Berlin, Germany.
Stephen had begun his career as a strength trainer at the very
first Nautilus Gym in Pennsylvania. He moved on to become the
Fitness Director at the Society Hill Club in Philadelphia where
he enjoyed national coverage on “Good Morning America” and
“Evening Magazine” as the developer of “Rambo Aerobic”, the
forerunner of the boot camp style of fitness training so popular
today.
In 1991 Stephen and his wife D.C., opened Maxercise
Sports/Fitness, but Stephen never abandoned his love for
grappling. After attending a Gracie Jiu-Jitsu seminar Stephen
knew he had seen the real thing.
Stephen started studying Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu seriously,
eventually becoming the first instructor to graduate from Rorion
Gracie’s Instructor Certification Program at the Gracie Academy
in Torrance, California. Rorion and Royce Gracie awarded Stephen
his brown belt in 1999.
On October 15, 2001 in Honolulu, Hawaii Stephen Maxwell was
awarded his Black belt by Relson Gracie. Stephen is the 1st
American to receive a black belt from Master Relson Gracie.
Today, Stephen keeps his hands in the personal training arena
and teaches Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu at Maxercise.
He combines his love for physical training and grappling by
being a regular contributor of training articles to martial arts
and martial arts training magazines like Matt Furey’s G.A.I.N.
